Matthew Curry bio_

With a career spanning 20 years, Matthew’s award-winning, graphic design and illustration has been profiled by APPLE, earned him two Grammy®-Nominations and an ART TALK feature on VICE®. Beyond his nominated work for Thievery Corporation, Matthew’s artwork has been commissioned by Fortune 500 Companies and hangs in galleries and private collections all over the world. In addition to his work as an artist, Matthew has also been invited to speak about his work and process for National Geographic, The Art Director’s Club, AIGA, and The Corcoran College of Art & Design. Matthew operates out of his studio in Georgetown (Washington D.C.) with the support of his wife Eugenia and their son, Alexander.

Matthew Curry & ashbydesign for Pokémon America

Our goal was to conceptualize merchandise and narratives without interfering with Pokemon’s core audience and product offerings. These offerings speak to the legacy of Pokémon, while remaining faithful to the foundational element of Pokémon: Collectibility.

Versions: Thievery Corporation

Inspired by a shared appreciation of The Beatles Revolver album cover by Klaus Voorman, Neal Ashby and design partner Matthew Curry attempted a true collaboration: both artists served as illustrator and designer, handing the storyline and digital files back and forth, over and over, until the lines between design and illustration were blurred. A 32 page book was included in the package, and limited editions of the merchandising poster and skateboard decks were made for sale. The creative process was illustrated in detail on a pop up website The Art of Versions. Ashby Design was featured on the Apple website for both the art and the technology used in creating the design.

The package went on to be nominated for the Grammy® Award for Best Recording Package.

Symphonik: Thievery Corporation

Continuing our design relationship with electronic duo Thievery Corporation, the latest package design direction was inspired by the orchestration that accompanies the music. The visual narrative of butterflies moving through the void of space to find lush organic worlds is the collaborative illustration of Matt Curry and Neal Ashby. The white sousaphones double as galactic mushrooms.
